The client & the challenge

This is a Google Ads international expansion story, but it didn't start as one. The e-commerce brand was spending $100–$200 a day and struggling to grow, boxed in on almost every side:

  • Shopping was suspended, so product listings, usually the backbone of e-commerce scaling, were off the table.
  • YouTube video wasn't an option because of the nature of the product.
  • Search volume was low for this kind of product, so there was only so much intent to buy in any one market.
  • The account already covered several countries, each with its own small pool of searches.

In practice the brand could use Search and the Display network and little else. The question was how to scale Search without any help from Shopping.

What we did

Most accounts scale vertically: adding channels and campaign types on top of what already works. That door was closed here beyond Search and Display. So we scaled horizontally instead.

  • Kept Search as the intent engine: Search stayed the core, capturing whatever demand existed in each market.
  • Expanded into more countries with Demand Gen: we took the account into other countries using Demand Gen, built without YouTube video, which bought impressions well beyond what Search alone could reach.
  • Stacked small markets: no single country had the volume to carry the budget, but together they gave the account room to spend more.

The results

Daily spend grew from $100–$200 to $800 a day, and revenue rose sharply from where it started, all without Shopping and without YouTube. Just as important, the multi-country footprint gave the brand a base to keep raising budget instead of hitting the ceiling of one small search market.

Lessons for Google Ads international expansion

When a channel is closed, add markets. If restrictions stop you adding campaign types, geography is often the next lever. Our international Google Ads expansion guide covers how to choose and stage new countries.

Low volume per country is not low volume overall. Several thin markets, each run with tight Search campaigns, can support a budget no single market could.

Restricted products still have reach options. Where video is ruled out, Demand Gen and Display can still put the brand in front of new audiences in a policy-safe way.

Work on a Shopping suspension in parallel. Scaling around a Merchant Center suspension is possible, but getting Shopping back widens every option. That is a separate process, handled by GMC Unban.
